The National Basketball Association’s (NBA) All-Star Weekend is an iconic event held annually during the NBA’s regular season. This star-studded weekend has various basketball games and contests that feature celebrities and many of the league’s stars. The 2020 All-Star Weekend was hosted at the United Center here in Chicago, so check out this guide to the events.
The NBA All-Star Celebrity Game
The All-Star Celebrity Game kicks off the weekend on Friday. Fans can watch some of their favorite celebrities showcase their basketball skills. This event started in 2003 and is made up of actors, musicians, and more. In the 2020 All-Star Celebrity Game, the participants included Hannibal Burress, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and Guy Fieri.
Rising Star Challenge
The Rising Star Challenge is an opportunity to watch some of the NBA’s upcoming stars play against each other. When the challenge started in 1994, it was dubbed the “Rookie Game” and only had first-year players. But in 2015, this event shifted its format to consist of young prospects divided into two groups: Team USA and Team World. All of the players must have fewer than two years of experience in the NBA.
State Farm All-Star Saturday Night
On Saturday, the NBA’s best players participate in niche competitions, like the Taco Bell Skills Challenge, AT&T Slam Dunk Contest, and MTN Dew 3-Point Contest. The Skills Challenge tests the players’ ball-handling, passing, and shooting ability. The Slam Dunk Contest showcases the participants’ athleticism and creativity. Each year’s dunk contest has specific rules, and the players receive a score out of 10 from a panel of five judges. Later in the night, the league’s best shooters take part in a contest with five shots from five different positions along the three-point line. Each shot is worth one point, except for the last shot of each position, which is worth two points.
NBA All-Star Game
The highlight of the NBA’s All-Star Weekend is on Sunday as the league’s top players compete in the marquee event, the All-Star Game. The media, players, and fans choose the starting lineup for the teams by voting. The two players who get the most votes from each conference are assigned a team, and they take turns choosing from the remaining pool of players.
