One of the great American cities, Chicago is home to one-of-a-kind food, people, and culture.

This Midwestern hub has been home to many prominent architects like Mies van der Rohe, Louis Sullivan, and Holabird & Root, all of whom helped to shape this community.

This Midwestern hub has been home to many prominent architects like Mies van der Rohe, Louis Sullivan, and Holabird & Root, all of whom helped to shape this community.

But out of all the talented architects who have left their mark on Chicago, maybe none have had as big of an impression as Frank Lloyd Wright.

Who Is Frank Lloyd Wright?

Born on June 8, 1867, in Richland Center, Wisconsin, Frank Lloyd Wright is one of America’s most prolific architects. Wright’s “Prairie-style” homes became the basis of 20th-century residential architecture seen across the U.S.

Born to a schoolteacher, Anna Lloyd-Jones, and a musician and preacher, William C. Wright, the Wrights moved around Iowa and Rhode Island in his early years before his parents decided to settle in his birth state of Wisconsin.

As a young man, Wright attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison from 1885-1886, but because they did not offer any architecture courses, he studied engineering. The slow-paced life of Wisconsin didn’t sit well with Wright. He longed for the big city life of Chicago, filled with unique buildings and people.

When Wright moved from Madison to Chicago in 1887, it marked a fresh start for him and American architecture.

Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago

On moving to Chicago, Wright found work doing architectural detailing with J.L. Silsbee. After his formative years of learning under Silsbee, Wright went on to work with profound architects Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan.

Eventually, Wright became Sullivan’s chief assistant.

Frank Lloyd Wright opened his own architectural practice in Chicago in 1893.

During what is known as Wright’s “Chicago years,” when he lived in the Oak Park neighborhood for 20 years, he designed 150 structures out of his Chicago studio. While not all of these structures live in the Windy City, Chicago is where he created his vision for a modern American way of living known as the “Prairie school” of architecture.

Some of the most notable structures Wright designed in and around Chicago include:

  • The Arthur Heurtley House (1902)
  • The Avery Coonley House (1907)
  • The Frederick C. Robie House (1910)

We have taken several limousine services over the years, and Echo Limousine is one of the best. They were very professional, arrived early for pickup going to O'Hare, and very prompt on our return trip home from O'Hare. The drivers were pleasant, as well as professional, and the Town Car was very clean."— Jay G. - South Holland, ILRead All Testimonials
